The Kilt

The kilt is the most typical garment worn in Scotland, it is a sort of skirt but it has the peculiarity that is worn by men. The kilt is usually made of woolen cloth with tartan pattern. It was first worn by boys and men in the 16th century in the Scottish Highlands. Since the 19th century it has been adopted for a wider part of the population and nowadays it is worn not only at formal events or sports but is also becoming an everyday clothing item in Scotland.

There have been different kilts through the history but the current kilt; the small one and also called the walking kilt, was invented by Thomas Rawlinson sometime in the 1720s after he considered the traditional kilt as cumbrous and difficult to manage, specially for workers. Rawlinson began to wear it himself and then the use spread among the other Highlanders and later among Northern Lowlanders.

Kilts have gone through adjustments and adaptations, for instance, in the World War I the first modern war in which it was developed a concern about camouflage, kilts turned khaki. These days fashion designers have tried to update the kilt with the aim of attract a wider public, so some of them have removed tartan patterns and have used other materials as leather.

The Scottish kilt is often worn with kilt hose; they are woolen socks with tartan pattern as well, a sporran(Gaelic for “purse”: a type of pouch) is worn around the waist and could be made of different materials from leather or fur to polished metal. A belt is also worn and it usually has a big buckle, a jacket of different traditional designs is another accessory that is usually saw with a kilt.
