London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. It is located on the River Thames and it is the city with the largest population in the United Kingdom, with over 13 million inhabitants.
London’s history goes back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium about two millennia ago. London’s ancient core includes 2.9 km2 of mediaeval territory. In this area, known as the City of London, live around 7,375 people, which is why London may also be referred to as the smallest city in England. Since the 19th century, the name London is also applied to the metropolis developed around the ancient core. This conurbation is known as the Greater London administrative area.
London is both a leading global city and financial centre. It is well known for its trends on arts, education, entertainment, fashion and tourism. It is considered to be a world cultural capital and a one of the most important tourist destinations. It is one of the world’s most visited cities and it is home of 43 universities.
There are four World Heritage Sites in London: the Tower of London; Kew Gardens; the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret’s Church; and the historic settlement of Greenwich. London also constrains numerous museums, galleries, libraries and other cultural institutions. One of its most iconic services, the London Underground, is the oldest underground railway network in the world.
London was the world’s most populous city from around 1831 to 1925. No less than 300 languages are spoken within Greater London, as a result of the wide range of peoples and cultures that coexist in this area.
