Charles Dickens
Charles John Huffam Dickens (Portsmouth, England, February 7, 1812 – Gads Hill Place, England, June 9, 1870) was a prominent English writer and novelist, one of the best known of world’s literature, and the foremost of the Victorian era. He was a master of the narrative genre, in which he incorporated a certain dose of humor and irony, but at the same time he used to make serious social criticism. In his work there are the descriptions of people and places, both real and imaginary. He sometimes used the pseudonym Boz.
His novels and short stories were very popular during his life, and they are still edited and adapted for films. Dickens wrote serialized novels, the format used at the time was fiction. Each new installment of his stories was awaited with great enthusiasm by his readers. He was and still is admired as an influential writer worldwide.
At the age of nine Charles Dickens spent time away from home, reading voraciously. He showed a particular fondness for the picaresque novels such as The Adventures of Roderick Random and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle by Tobias Smollett and Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones. This would be his favorite writer. He also read with enjoyment adventure novels as Robinson Crusoe and Don Quixote.
Dickens, one of the greatest writers in of the history was not a writer all of his life; at the age of twelve he worked in a shoe polish factory in which he used to stick labels on cans of polish shoes for six shillings per week. He also was an inter in a law firm and court reporter as well. In 1828 he began working as a reporter at Doctor’s Commons and later entered as a parliamentary reporter.
On June 9, 1870, Dickens died the day after suffering a stroke.
