William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, UK on April 26 1564 according to the Julian calendar. He was an English playwright, poet and actor. Sometimes known as the Bard of Avon (or simply The Bard), Shakespeare is considered the most important writer in the English language and one of the most famous in world literature.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, “Shakespeare is generally recognized as the greatest writer of all times, unique figure in the history of literature. The fame of other poets such as Homer and Dante Alighieri, or novelists like Miguel de Cervantes, Leo Tolstoy and Charles Dickens, has transcended national barriers, but none of them have gotten the reputation of Shakespeare, whose pieces are now read and characterized more frequently and in more countries than ever. The prophecy of one of his great contemporary, Ben Jonson, has been accomplished: “Shakespeare does not belong to a single time but eternity”.
Shakespeare was a revered poet and playwright in his time, but his reputation did not reach the very high current levels until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, hailed his genius, and the Victorians worshiped Shakespeare with such devotion that George Bernard Shaw called it “Bardolatry”.
Shakespeare passed away on April 23, 1616, his death has been always associated with drink, and he died, according to the most widespread comment, as a result of high fever, due to their state of drunkenness. Nevertheless recent research conducted by German Scientists pointed out that is possible that the English writer was suffering from cancer.
There have been about 250 films based on texts by Shakespeare, fact that demonstrates the enormous influence of the work of this writer. The work that was more times brought to the screen is Hamlet, with 61 adaptations.
