Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21, 1899. He was an American writer and journalist, and one of the top novelists and short story writers of the twentieth century. His sober and minimalistic style had a great influence on twentieth-century fiction, while his life of adventure and public image influenced later generations.
Hemingway wrote most of his work between mid-1920 and mid-1950. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea and the following year the Nobel Prize for Literature for his complete pieces. He published seven novels, six collections of short stories and two essays. Posthumously three novels, four collections of short stories and three essays were published. Many of these pieces are considered classics of American literature.
After finishing high school Hemingway became a reporter for a Kansas’ newspaper but this situation didn’t last too much, then he enlisted with the World War I ambulance drivers until 1918 when he was seriously wounded and had to return home.
In 1921 Hemingway moved to Paris after getting married with his first wife, Hadley Richardson, in this city he worked as a correspondent and started being influenced by what was called the Lost Generation; an expatriated community of modernist writers and artists. His first novel The Sun Also Rises, was published in 1926 and one year after he divorced from Hadley Richardson and married Pauline Pfeiffer, this couple broke up after Hemingway returned from the Spanish civil war where he had worked as a journalist, and then, one of his most famous pieces, For Whom The Bell Tolls, was written in 1940. In the same year he made Martha Gellhorn his third wife, and then he felt attracted by Mary Welch whom he met in London during World War II and married after divorcing from Gellhorn.
After he published The Man and The Sea in 1952, he went on a safari to Africa where he was about to die by two successive plane crashes, these accidents left him seriously wounded and under physical pain for the rest of his life. Hemingway used to keep residence in different places in the United States and Cuba but he died in in Ketchum, Idaho, where he killed himself on July 2, 1961.
