Tudor Rose
The Tudor Rose also known as the English Rose or the Union Rose is a traditional heraldic emblem of England and it takes its name and origin of the Tudor Dynasty. The flower was drawn with ten petals, five white in the center and five red on the outside edge and it represented the union of the House of York with the House of Lancaster and the end of the civil war that bloodied English history during the fifteenth century. That war opposed intermittently members and supporters of the House of Lancaster against the House of York between 1455 and 1487. Both families claimed the throne of England, by common origin in the House of Plantagenet, as descendants of King Edward III. The name “War of the two Roses” or “War of the Roses” is referred to the emblems of both houses, the white rose of York and Lancaster’s red rose.
The Tudor Rose is used as the plant badge of England, as Scotland uses the thistle, Ireland uses the shamrock, and Wales uses the leek. It is also found on the dress uniforms of the Yeomen Warders at the Tower of London, and of the Yeomen of the Guard. It is part of the design of the British Twenty Pence coin made between 1982 and 2008, it can be also observed in the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom. It features on the coat of arms of Canada. This symbol is also used by many other organizations even out of England like the borough of Queens in New York City that uses a Tudor Rose on its flag and seal.
