Hollywood
Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. It is home of the entertainment industry, including several of its historic studios. Its name has become in a metonym for the motion picture industry of the U.S. Hollywood is also a highly ethnically diverse, densely populated, economically diverse neighborhood.
Hollywood was a small community in 1870 and it officially fused with the city of Los Angeles in 1910, and soon thereafter a prominent film industry began to arise, eventually it became in the most dominant and recognizable film industry in the world. In the early 1900s, film production companies in New York and New Jersey started moving to California because of the monopoly established by Edison in the US and also for its many sunny days during the year and the days were also longer. Although there was already electricity, movie studios depend on natural light to film. The first studio in the area of Hollywood was founded in 1911. In the same year another fifteen studios settled there, mainly Studios tried to avoid the abusive Edison rate (who held the patent as a theoretical inventor of cinema). The first film by a Hollywood studio, Nestor Motion Picture Company, was shot on October 26, 1911. Four major film companies – Paramount, Warner Bros., RKO, and Columbia – had studios in Hollywood, as did several minor companies and rental studios. In the 1920s, Hollywood was the fifth largest industry in the nation.
During the 50s lot of development was started in Hollywood and it hasn’t stopped since then; the Hollywood Freeway was extended, The Capitol Records Building was built in 1956, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame was created in 1958. The Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Since 2010 the Dolby Theatre, which opened in 2001 as the Kodak Theatre, is the home of the Oscars.
