Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell (Edinburgh, Scotland, March 3, 1847-Beinn Bhreagh, Canada, August 2, 1922) was a British scientist, inventor and speech therapist. He contributed to the development of telecommunications and aviation technology. His father, grandfather and brother were also related to the field of elocution and speech (his mother and wife were deaf), fact that profoundly influenced the work of Bell, especially his research on listening and speaking and his experiments on hearing devices.
Alexander Graham Bell got immersed in many other inventions during his life, including the construction of hydrofoils and aeronautics research. In 1888, Alexander Graham Bell was one of the founders of the National Geographic Society and on January 7, 1898, he became president of that institution.
Son of Professor Alexander Melville Bell and Elisa Grace, Alexander Graham Bell had two brothers but both died of tuberculosis. Like his brothers, Bell received his early school years in his father’s house. Then he was enrolled at the Royal High School in Edinburgh, he left when he was15 years old. He was not an outstanding student in school, but, on the contrary, he used to miss classes and got mediocre grades. His main interest was science, especially biology, and showed indifference to other school subjects, to the disappointment of his demanding father.
With the intention of help a friend’s father, at the age of 12, Bell built his first invention; a simple Barking machine that worked and was used for many years. About the telephone, it could be said that his research led him to try to get the patent for the telephone in America, which actually got in 1876, although the device had been previously developed by the Italian Antonio Meucci, who was not recognized as the inventor until June 11, 2002.
Pernicious anemia took away Bell’s life on August 2, 1922 at his home in Beinn Bhreagh, at the age of 75 His wife Mabel took care of him in his last months. He was buried in the nearby mountains. He left a widow and two daughters, Elisa May and Marion.
