J.K. Rowlling
Joanne “Jo” Rowling, pen names J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, is a British writer best known as the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series. The books have acquired worldwide attention, won multiple prizes, and sold more than 400 million copies. They have become the best-selling book series in history and been the basis for a series of movies which became the highest-grossing film series in history. Rowling had total approval on the scripts and kept creative control by working as a producer on the final installment. Rowling has also written three books for adult, The Casual Vacancy and-under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith-the crime fiction novels The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Silkworm. And there were six sequels, the last, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007.
She was born in Yate, Gloucestershire; she was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International when she devised the idea for the Harry Potter series on a late train from Manchester to London in 1990. The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, divorce from her first husband and relative poverty until Rowling ended the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1997. She wrote in many cafés, especially Nicolson’s Café and The Elephant House; In a 2001 BBC interview, Rowling denied the gossip that she wrote in local cafés to breakout from her unheated flat, pointing out that it had heating. One of the reasons she wrote in cafés was that taking her baby out for a walk was the best way to make her fall asleep
She is the United Kingdom’s best-selling living author, with sales in excess of £238m. The 2008 Sunday Times Rich List valued Rowling’s fortune at £560 million, placing her as the twelfth richest woman in the United Kingdom. Forbes ranked Rowling as the forty-eighth most powerful celebrity of 2007, and Time magazine named her as a runner-up for its 2007 Person of the Year. Rowling was named the “Most Influential Woman in Britain” by leading magazine editors.
