J. R. R. Tolkien
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, often cited as JRR Tolkien or JRRT, was born on January 3, 1892 and he was a British writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of the classic high- fantasy novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
After Tolkien’s death, the third of his sons, Christopher, published a series of works based on extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts of his father, including The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin. These books, along with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, form a connected body of tales, poems, stories, fiction, invented languages, and literary essays on an imaginary world called Arda, and more extensively in one of its continents, known as Middle Earth
Many other writers like William Morris, Robert E. Howard and ER Eddison preceded Tolkien in the fantasy genre with such famous and influential works as Conan the Barbarian, but the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when published in the United States led directly to popular resurgence of genre. This has placed Tolkien as the “father” of modern fantasy literature, or more specifically, high fantasy. Tolkien’s works have inspired many other works of fantasy and have had a lasting effect on the entire field. In 2008, The Times Magazine ranked him sixth on a list of The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien passed away on September 2, 1973, 21 month after his wife died; both were buried in the same grave.
