Lecturas en inglés: Saint Patrick’s Day
Many Irish people have moved from Ireland to the U.S. around two centuries ago. They brought the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with them. St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday in Ireland, its origins were mostly religious but it has been changed in America.
Today in the United States people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green no matter how. Actually, if you don’t wear at least one small piece of cloth or paint, school children may nip you. The shamrock is known to be the most common symbol of this celebration. Due to the fact that the shamrock has three leaves, many years ago St. Patrick (a religious leader) used the shamrock to show the Irish people the Trinity (father, son and holy spirit). That’s why many people wear a shamrock design on this day because it is believed to bring good luck.
On this day many people also like going to bars and drinking beer. They tell jokes and have fun with friends and relatives. People who aren’t irish or don’t come from that country like to pretend they are Irish, as well. Some cities hold celebrate this day by holding parades. It’s not a very important holiday in the United States, but it is undoubtly funny for the people who want to enjoy it and like to part. It is very different from the celebration that the Irish people have back in their country.
Lecturas en ingles: An adventurous trip.
David: Oh Karen, welcome back! How was Russia?
Karen: It was great. I had such a nice time.
David: Please tell me, what was it like?
Karen: It was like being in other planet.
David: Where did you go?
Karen: The first five day I spent in Moscow . As you know Moscow is one of the biggest cities in Russia. Well, I went sightseeing – I went to the Red Square, I went to see a tenis match and of course, I went shopping. The second week I spent travelling around Saint Petesburg. I went to the Saint Isaacas Cathedral….
David: You are so lucky! I have always wanted to be there.
Karen: As I expected, it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. I stayed staring at the Winter Palace for about one hour. It was wonderful because I saw some Chinese people camping by the gardens; they told me that in China the gardens help people heal.
David: What was Sweden like?
Karen: Really nice, but not as beautiful as the places of Russia I was in.
David: What an adventurous trip!
Karen: I know. Now you tell me, where did you go?
David: No, unfortunately I had to stay here, I had too much work undone. Maybe next year I will go on an adventurous trip.
Karen: Aahhh…. Hey David, I wouldn’t worry if I were you, I brought you a souvenir from Europe.
David: What is it?
Karen: A map of Barcelona.
David: Why?
Karen: Because we are going together to Spain next week, so get ready.
