Las preposiciones en inglés, al igual que en español, son palabras que sirven para expresar relaciones. Existen muchas preposiciones en inglés que se usan en la conversación diaria.

Las preposiciones en inglés indican una relación entre un nombre, un pronombre o una oración, con otra palabra o grupo de palabras, frases, objetos directos u oraciones subordinadas. Según el tipo de relación que indiquen, se pueden clasificar en preposiciones de lugar, tiempo, causalidad, objetivo, finalidad y modo.

Una misma preposición en inglés puede actuar como preposición en diferentes modalidades, como sucede con la preposición for (para, por), que puede funcionar como preposición de modo, de finalidad o de causalidad.

También existen preposiciones en inglés formadas por dos o más palabras, las cuales son conocidas como preposiciones compuestas (compound prepositions).

El uso de las preposiciones en inglés

Como ya dijimos, las preposiciones en inglés indican una relación. La estructura más básica del uso de la preposición es la existencia de una palabra o frase principal, que podemos llamar antecedente, la preposición, y la palabra sobre la que actúa la preposición, que se llama objeto. Tanto el antecedente como el objeto pueden tener modificadores. La estructura sería como la siguiente:

Antecedente (+ modificadores) + preposición + objeto (+ modificadores)

Sin embargo, en algunas ocasiones podemos ver una frase contiene la preposición y carece de antecedente. Aunque no tenga un antecedente, Una preposición siempre tiene un objeto, que puede ir antes o después de la preposición:
