The Best Gift Ever
Every gift has its value and it’s usually hard to pick only one of them to remember. Even so, I have to admit that there is one particular gift I could call the best I’ve ever received.
It wasn’t my birthday, Christmas Eve or any other special day in the calendar. It was just a Monday morning like any other. I was having breakfast with my mom in the kitchen, about to leave for school.
My dad wasn’t on his way to the office yet, which seemed really strange since he was never at home so late. When I asked about this, mom said he was just delayed, “nothing to worry about”.
We finished our breakfast and dad was still at home, arranging his tie knot in front of the mirror. “Are you ready for school?”– he asked, and then offered to drive us there, since he was already late for work.
I sensed something unusual in the way he spoke, and also in the way mom was speaking. They both acted as if they were trying hard to restrain their excitement about some event I knew nothing about.
We got in dad’s car and drove to school. There we were, less than one block away, and dad didn’t slow down. In fact, he didn’t stop at all: he just drove past the school and, to my surprise, took the first highway entrance.
“Where are we going?”– was my question. “Haven’t you been saying how much you would like to go to Disneyland lately?”– asked my mom back. “That’s where we’re going! Disneyland!”– she exclaimed. I swear, that was not only the best gift ever but also the greatest surprise!
