The Wall Street Crash of 1929
The Wall Street Crash of 1929 was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the stock market in the United States, taking into consideration the global reach and long-term sequel that led to the crisis of 1929 also known as The Great depression. The following three phrases are often used to describe this collapse of shares: Black Thursday, Black Monday and Black Tuesday. They are all suitable, since the crash was not a matter of one day. The initial fall occurred on Black Thursday (October 24, 1929), but the catastrophic deterioration occurred on Black Monday and Black Tuesday (28 and 29 October 1929) which precipitated the spread of panic and the beginning of long term unprecedented consequences for the United States. The collapse continued for a month. Although the crash coincided with the Great Depression, economists and historians disagree on what role the crash played in the later economic, social and political events.
At the time of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the city of New York had grown into the largest metropolis and in its Wall Street district were many who believed that the market could sustain high price levels. Earlier, Irving Fisher had proclaimed: “The prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau.”
Euphoria and financial gains of the great market trend were shattered on Black Thursday, when the value of actions on the New York Stock Exchange collapsed. The share price fell that day and continued to fall at an unprecedented rate for an entire month. 100,000 American workers lost their jobs in a period of 3 days. In the days leading up to Black Thursday, the market was severely unstable because business weren´t handled properly, so the stock exchange fell due to the inexperience of some people.
