Union Jack
The flag of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is usually known as the Union Jack or the Union Flag. The current version of this flag was designed in 1801, and it was made for the union of Ireland and Great Britain. On the flag can be observed the Saint George’s (Patron Saint of England) Red Cross, edged in white and laying over the Cross of Saint Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), both are superimposed on the white Saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland), all this over a blue background. Wales is also part of the UK, however is not represented in this flag.
It has to be said that the Union Jack is used in overseas British territories and on other flags (specifically on the upper left-hand quarter) of several countries that were British possessions.
There have been disputes about the proper usage of the term jack when referring to the flag; the experts claim that the term Union Jack must be used in a naval environment only, nevertheless the Union Flag is commonly known as the Union Jack.
After the British invasion in the 1960s, the Union Jack has also been used as a fashion item one example of this is the Reebok logo which pretends point out the British origin and proud of the brand. Some rock and pop stars and bands as the who, Oasis, Morrissey, Spice girls and others, show the flag during their concerts and as an image item.
